Delta Portal updated
The updated Delta Portal was presented on 6 November last, during the Delta Conference. It was viewed by a large number of visitors whose reactions were for the most part positive. The Delta Portal provides insight into the quantitative substantiation of the preferred strategies and the Delta Decisions. This information is of use to the water professionals who will be implementing the Delta Programme in the near future. The education sector has also expressed its interest in using the portal.
New structure and new maps on the Delta Portal
The Delta Portal has undergone a minor facelift. Due to the growing amount of information on the portal, finding information had turned out to be increasingly difficult. For that reason, the Delta Portal has been thoroughly reorganised. A clear distinction has been introduced between map layers to be viewed on the portal maps and information available in PDF format. Finding information has been simplified by arranging the apps in a clear manner, illustrating the process from “issue” to “Delta Decision”, with a distinction between the information made available through the Delta Programme and other information.
A great deal of new information has been incorporated into the Delta Portal, such as new information regarding the replacement of wet constructions (VONK), water safety maps and maps pertaining to the preferred strategies and Delta Decisions. Furthermore, new calculations regarding the freshwater supply and water safety have been added, based on the Delta Model, such as preferred strategies for the Rhine Estuary-Drechtsteden, Rivers and Freshwater sub-programmes. In addition, all (source) documents, such as the synthesis documents, were added to the Delta Portal.
What is the Delta Portal and for whom is it intended?
The Delta Portal is a (geographical) presentation tool on the Internet that makes information from the Delta Model accessible in an appealing manner. For example, model-based results of the Freshwater and Water Safety sub-programmes from the Delta Model can be combined with the basic maps such as the infrastructure, national, municipal and water board district borders, the use of space, functions and values. It is also possible to display relevant information from other (effect) models and to present the visualisations made by the Delta Studio.
Through the portal, the sub-programmes have gained insight into the national coherence of measures and strategies.
This year, the Delta Portal was consulted by a minimum of 100 visitors a month. Visitors are usually experts and policy consultants of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, Rijkswaterstaat and the district water boards. The Delta Portal has also been consulted by interest groups and other government authorities to gain a better picture of the impact of measures implemented under the Delta Programme.
The future: the role of the Delta Portal in the implementation of the Delta Programme?
The Delta Portal constitutes a sound knowledge base and provides a great deal of information that can be used in the implementation of the Delta Programme. The analyses that underpin the quantitative substantiation of the Delta Decisions and preferred strategies are available via the Delta Portal as a knowledge base for the implementation of the Delta Programme.
Possible applications in the implementation of the Delta Programme include, for example, the Flood Protection Programme (HWBP) and Freshwater Supply Levels (VZN). In the Flood Protection Programme, the water safety model calculations can be used as a basis for selecting and fleshing out future measures and projects in the fields of river expansion, dyke strengthening and multi-layer safety. The Delta Portal can also be used to present information from the Flood Protection Programme.
Freshwater Supply Levels for 2021 have been agreed upon and set down for all districts. In the preliminary process, a great deal of information will be collected regarding the demand for water, the supply of water and the distribution of water. This information can be made accessible and shared through the Delta Portal, together with the Freshwater calculations that have already been made for the Delta Programme 2015.
