Knappe Waterhoofden Competition 2013: Green Cities

The aim of the Knappe Waterhoofden competition for secondary school students is to find the best subject-cluster final assignments on the topic of Water.

Nine submissions battled each other in a 2-minute pitch. A jury that included Bart Parmet of the Delta Programme assessed the submissions.

The topics were presented with enthusiasm and expertise and ranged from water purification to sustainable solutions to climate problems. The winners came from the latter category with an idea for Green Cities with houses fitted with green roofs. As a step towards creating a climate-proof city, these green roofs with gardens would capture rainwater. This has the benefit of reducing excesses of water, lessening heat stress and results in an attractive garden with fruit, vegetables or flowers for very low additional costs.

Kimberly Schoenmaker and Lotte Hoes will be representing the Netherlands in the Stockholm Junior Water Prize during the World Water Week in Sweden later this year! The Knappe Waterhoofden competition is an initiative of the Netherlands Water Partnership, Wetsus, Rijkswaterstaat and the Ministry of I&M, among others.
