Delta Commissioner emphasises importance of adaptive delta management at International Water Week

On 5 November, Delta Commissioner Wim Kuijken opened the International Water Week in the Amsterdam RAI Exhibition and Convention Centre with a keynote speech on adaptive delta management. In the presence of some 40 international delegations (with about 1000 participants) Wim Kuijken spoke about the Dutch approach and the lessons learned in the Delta Programme.

Given the enormous global challenges we are facing from climate change and rising sea levels, the Delta Commissioner focused on international cooperation in knowledge sharing and on the establishment of partnerships between authorities, knowledge institutions and the business community. The Netherlands plays a leading and coordinating role in international cooperation and climate adaptation.

The Dutch Delta Programme is currently preparing an implementation programme. An important element is to encourage innovations that can lead to cost savings and support the objectives of water safety measures. The International Water Week and the Delta Conference on 7 November put the Netherlands on the map in both a national and international context.
