Delta Commissioner meets Chair of the Rockefeller Foundation

Today, Wim Kuijken spoke to David Rockefeller Jr. about the Delta Programme. Mr Rockefeller is Chair of the Rockefeller Foundation in the US.

The Rockefeller Foundation focuses on improving human welfare worldwide by, among other things, advocating for resilience against natural disasters and climate change. It encourages innovative and creative solutions. Mr Rockefeller was visiting the Netherlands for a few days. The Foundation recently chose Rotterdam as one of the 33 resilient cities which it funds across the globe.

During the meeting, Wim Kuijken explained the reasons for the Delta Programme and its approach. Unlike in most countries, the Dutch Delta Programme is not the result of a disaster but rather is aimed at preventing disasters. This explains its multi-governance working method and institutional aspects. Mr Rockefeller was especially interested in the adaptive approach that allows the Delta Programme to make uncertain climate and socio-economic developments manageable and enables multiple authorities and stakeholders to work together effectively.
