Delta Commissioner visits Segbroek College during College Tour

“To reduce the flood risk for thousands of people, your house must be demolished. How can you get people to agree to this?" This was one of the many questions put to Delta Commissioner Wim Kuijken during his College Tour visit to Segbroek College in The Hague. Together with their geography teacher, students in years 5 and 6 of pre-university education (VWO) invited the Delta Commissioner to their school and were able to ask him a wide range of questions. The questions were divided across the following themes: safety, the economy and public support.

The questions on the economy included the Netherlands’ international position in the field of water. The emergence of economic problems arising from salinisation was also discussed. Regarding safety, questions were asked about the new safety standards and the students also wanted to know what people in the Randstad conurbation should do in the event of a disaster.

Segbroek College devotes a great deal of attention to the Delta Programme during geography lessons. Additional activities are also undertaken. For example, alongside the mandatory curriculum, students can take a geography field trip to the Sand Motor. The Delta Commissioner’s response to the College Tour was enthusiastic: "I am impressed by the questions that were put to me. The students are very familiar with the Delta Programme and know what they are talking about. Most inspiring. They are the future. Naturally, I hope that a number of these students are enthusiastic about the water sector because there is a lot of work to be done – now and in the future.”
