Delta Commissioner commemorates flood disaster victims

In the presence of, among others, the King’s Commissioner for Zeeland and the Mayor of Schouwen-Duiveland, Delta Commissioner Wim Kuijken today commemorated the disaster that took so many lives on 1 February 1953. It was 61 years ago today that large parts of the provinces of Zeeland and West-Brabant and the islands of Zuid-Holland were hit by flooding. More than 1800 people and many animals were drowned in the flood and 100,000 people lost their homes and possessions.

“Commemoration is important in remembering the victims and looking towards our country’s future. Today marks exactly four years since I started my work as Delta Commissioner and this year we will arrive at significant decisions that will point out the direction we will take regarding issues such as the safety of our country. We can prevent a disaster like that of 1953 with these measures,” according to the Delta Commissioner.
