Delta Commissioner visits Deltares
At the invitation of the High-Water Protection Programme (HWBP 2), the Delta Commissioner visited Deltares on 26 May. He was brought up to date regarding important new knowledge that will be applied when strengthening dikes that have a peat subsurface. The study is a combination of scientific and applied research.
Field studies have been performed along the Markermeer dikes of the Hollands Noorderkwartier Water Authority. Deltares will support the field studies with laboratory tests. Once ENW (Expertise Network for Flood Protection has verified the new knowledge it will be immediately used in dike strengthening designs to be implemented along the Markermeer which are now in preparation within the framework of the HWBP 2.
In addition to contributing to research and enabling new insights to be applied in practice, appropriate innovative forms of contracts are also being considered for the Markermeer dikes project. This makes the project a large-scale one in which a number of innovative developments that are important to the Delta Programme are being brought together.
