Students from Segbroek College visit Watersnoodmuseum

On Friday 6 June 2014, students from Segbroek College in The Hague visited the Watersnoodmuseum in Ouwerkerk at the invitation of Delta Commissioner Wim Kuijken. They were given a tour of the museum and learned about the catastrophic flood of 1953 and the Netherlands’ centuries-long battle against water. The Youth Water Board also gave a presentation.

The Watersnoodmuseum is housed in four large concrete basins, the Phoenix Caissons. The exhibition not only tells the story of the catastrophic flood of 1 February 1953, but also provides an impression of the impact that water has on our daily life today. Moreover, the museum gives us a glimpse of how the Delta Programme will deal with water safety in the future.

Sounds, images, photos, newspaper clippings, testimonies and a wide variety of materials made for an impressive exhibition for the students. The visit to the museum was a follow-up to the talk the students had with the Delta Commissioner in January this year. One of the students put it like this: “The Delta Commissioner’s story in January was very convincing and here in the museum everything becomes truly real. Here you can see that we really do have to work on our water safety constantly.”
