Delta Commissioner rounds off climate debate at Heat in the Delta presentation

Today, at a meeting organised by Architectuur Lokaal in Amsterdam, various parties participated in lively discussions on energy and climate issues, led by Felix Rottenberg. An inspiring introduction concerning the climate by NOS weatherman Peter Kuipers Munnike was followed by the presentation of the Peilstok award.

Jury chair Pier Vellinga presented the 2014 Peilstok award to the city of Amsterdam. The Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment has initiated the Peilstok (“sounding rod”) award for inspiring solutions aimed at making the built-up area water-robust and climate-proof. The award went to Betondorp Rainproof for its interactive and integrated exploration of climate-adaptive solutions for Amsterdam’s most densely paved district.

The debate subsequently focused on possibilities for imposing the condition that all designs commissioned by public authorities be climate-proof and water-robust.

The Delta Commissioner rounded off with a discussion with Felix Rottenberg regarding the working methods of the Delta Programme, the importance of communication and the opportunities for integrated designs attendant on the objectives of the Delta Programme. Significant examples such as Texel, Scheveningen, Marken and the sea wall near Petten were mentioned. The Delta Commissioner then explained the Delta Decision on spatial adaptation and stressed the important role that local authorities can and must play to make the Netherlands more climate-proof, together with all the brainpower available in the country. The process has been set in motion and every development and re-development initiative can be utilized.
