Ap Verheggen presents unique work of art that makes water of its own accord

On 22 April, the Hague artist Ap Verheggen revealed his unique sculpture DC01 in the inner courtyard of the Sculptures by the Sea museum in Scheveningen. Delta Programme Commissioner Wim Kuijken attended the presentation. The sculpture uses solar energy to collect water from the air, thus operating as a fountain. In 2010, Ap Verheggen presented his project cool (E)motion during the first national Delta Conference.

With this project, Ap Verheggen intends to send out a positive message that climate change may also be used to our advantage. The more sun, the higher the temperatures, the more water will be produced. He has constructed this project by combining common, widely available technologies. With this creative concept and its huge potential he hopes to inspire others to embrace and further develop this technology in order to use it in (new) areas facing droughts.

Nature always plays an important part in Ap Verheggen’s work, such as his cool(E)motion project in 2010, involving 2 large sculptures placed on an iceberg in Greenland. With sculpture DC01, he continues the Nature theme. Depending on the amount of sun and other weather conditions, the sculpture comes to live and starts to produce its own water. The water will spout in gushes and create a unique visual effect on the wooden surface: a process that cannot be predicted or controlled, just like the whims of Nature.

This first sculpture is part of his SunGlacier concept and will be on display in the Sculptures by the Sea Museum.
